June 2005Washington County Memorial Hospital's mammography program recently underwent its annual survey, which found no deficiencies, ranking the hospital's program in the top 3% of mammography programs in Missouri. The survey was conducted by the state of Missouri on behalf of the Federal Food and Drug Administration, which regulates programs in accordance with MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) regulations. The hospital's Registered Mammography Technologists and interpreting physicians are required to obtain significant continuing education credits each year, and the hospital has recently upgraded portions of the equipment used to increase sensitivity to micro-calcifications and other findings needed in identifying the early stages of breast cancer. Patients are reminded that early detection is the best protection against breast cancer. WCMH Board Members Phyllis Ferguson and Melvin Warden and WCMH Administrator Clark Duncan attended a planning and discussion retreat sponsored by the Great Mines Health Center on May 24th at Lakeside Dining in Potosi. Not surprisingly, the issues identified as crucial for our community health were Oral Health, Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Pre-Natal Care. Hopefully the grant monies requested by the Great Mines Health Center can be applied toward some of these problem areas as already proposed in many of their grant applications. The hospital's construction and renovation project continues at a brisk clip. The target date for United Excel to turn the new building over to WCMH has been moved back one week from July 21st to July 28th. The hospital will then have approximately two weeks to clean, equip, stock, and prepare to start seeing patients in the front half of the new Emergency Department. A Dedication/Open House is tentatively being planned for the afternoon of August 9th. Demolition and renovation of existing ER space and other interior renovations will continue through January of next year. Underway at the present time are interior demolition and renovation work in the old Respiratory Services Department/Sleep Lab, the main back corridor and waiting area. In the front of the new building a main entrance sidewalk was poured today, some of the new curbing has had to be redone, and asphalt will be put down next week. |
