June, July, and August 2006 Newsletter

WCMH and the Great Mines Health Center will be collaborating on an 8-session Diabetes Education and Support Group series beginning June 27th. Donna Joyce from WCMH Home Health and Jennifer Genua of GMHC will be conducting the sessions at the new GMHC Outreach Office located next to Boyer Lumber. The sessions will be Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. for 8 weeks from 6/27 through 8/22, with no session on Tuesday July 4th. WCMH Dietician Berdine Shrader will also participate.

The hospital’s mammography service had its MQSA accreditation survey on Thursday, June 22, and the survey was successful. Congratulations to the staff for this accreditation. The board has approved the purchase of a new mammography unit and that is underway.

Dr. Jose Ramirez, gastroenterologist, is no longer providing services at WCMH. He had reduced his visits from weekly to biweekly a few months ago. Efforts will be made to increase the availability of gastroenterology services in light of this development.

Plans continue toward making WCMH a smoke-free campus, as directed by the Board. Sources of support for quitting smoking are being developed, such as a support group, brochures and videos from the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association, and discount pricing for specific treatments including acupuncture. Implementation is scheduled for September 1, which is the date most hospitals in Missouri are converting to non-smoking facilities.

The tremendous storms which struck the Washington County and St. Louis area the night of July 19th resulted in a power outage causing the hospital to run on emergency power supplied by its generators from approximately 8:30 p.m. until approximately 7:00 a.m. July 20th. The hospital’s generators, and the emergency power capabilities reconfigured and bolstered during our recent renovation and expansion worked successfully as designed. With the tremendous influx of patients to our Emergency Department in the hours following the storm and especially on Thursday July 20th, it was a blessing to be able to meet that influx with a wonderful new Emergency Department instead of our old facilities. Special thanks to all hospital staff who went out of their way to meet the needs for comfort and medical care of our local population.

Dr. Henry Steele will begin working full-time in the office at Healthway Primary Care beginning September 5th. Call 573-438-2977 for an appointment.

Dr. Nadia Hanna started in practice as planned August 1st at Austin Plaza Primary Care in collaboration with Nurse Practitioner Connie Young. Call 573-438-8500 for an appointment.

A retirement luncheon was held for long-time Dietary Supervisor Phyllis Lucas on Friday, July 28th. The hospital also recognized Georgiann Moon with a retirement cake on Friday, August 11, 2006.

The hospital and American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive here this Friday, August 18th, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm.

The annual Washington County Health Fair will be held at the Potosi Elementary School on Saturday, September 16th from 7:30 am until 12:00 noon.
