MARCH 2001

After several weeks on the job as Administrator at Washington County Memorial Hospital, I can assure the residents of our service area that there are many outstanding, highly skilled, and dedicated people working here. I would like to thank the many people who have welcomed me.

One topic you may be hearing about is Washington County Memorial Hospital’s application for Critical Access Hospital (CAH) certification. The CAH Program was originally created by the federal Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Each state developed its own specific criteria, and Missouri joined the program in 1999. The program addresses some of the financial hardships rural hospitals face with Medicare reimbursement. It is anticipated that participation in this program will substantially improve Medicare reimbursement rates for Washington County Memorial Hospital.

Participation in this program will not cause any reduction of services at Washington County Memorial Hospital or increased cost to our patients. The Missouri Department of Health and the Health Care Financing Administration must approve our application, before we can be certified as a Critical Access Hospital. We hope to be certified by June 1, 2001.

If you have any questions about the CAH program, feel free to contact my office at 573-438-5451 ext. 257.

H. Clark Duncan, Jr.

Administrator
